European electricity companies will strive to achieve a carbon-neutral power supply by 2050, work for an integrated European electricity market that will deliver power cost-efficiently and reliably, and promote energy-efficient electricity applications as a key part of the solution to the great energy-climate challenge. This is the core of a Declaration handed over to EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs by sixty electricity Chief Executives.
The CEOs explained to Mr Piebalgs their view that to achieve this means deploying all economic low-carbon power generation options, developing a single European market through progressive regional integration, and engaging with customers and regulators to ensure take-up of energy-efficient electro-technologies. They called on the Commissioner and his fellow European policymakers to ensure a framework conducive to attaining these objectives.
…and the U.S. electricity companies are nowhere to be seen. At least there is no longer a leadership vacuum in Washington. Maybe Obama will drag the power companies kicking and screaming if the U.S. ever gets its economy moving again.

Хм… даже такое бывает.
This is what its all about people! Will our pols wake up! lets hope so
Just posted about something similar with the UK running trials on electric cars. Here’s hoping that the trials lead to some concrete and concerted effort to start moving away from petrol. Hopefully a green energy solution is also found soon so we can power the cars in a more environmentally friendly way.
Not 100% positive for me yet, as I get the feeling that this carbon-neutral power supply by 2050 will be reached by nuclear waste rich power plants. And this is also not a solution.
But overal this is a positive sign which the US should be demonstrating too, esp. as this seems to be an easier target for the USA to reach (more open field, less dense population).
I keep good hopes that soon rather than later we will be able to live and consume in a more environment friendly manner.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is regarded as a good transition solution in Europe, eventually the goal must be energy generated
from clean/renewable sources. There are several projects underway right now, heavily sponsored by the EU. Emerging economies should take their responsability and start investing in CCS as well as renewable energy.
This a huge undertaking, and one that is vital for our future.
Putting the whole environmental issue to one side for a moment, we’re consuming oil, gas and coal at an unsustainable rate. Oil and gas prices will continue to rise and rise – 2050 is 40 years away.
40 years ago, you could fill your car with fuel for a couple of dollars. How much does that cost you now? How much is it going to cost in 40 years time. That’s a frightening thought!
Great post, we need more people to take advantage of renewable energy, its the only way to go!
Unfortunately, in the U.S. it’s mostly about politics and not what’s best for the people or the planet.
This is positive but it’s hard to know how much of it is just posturing.
True, but hopefully the goals are reached.
In the US you’re getting government cash for your old cars and now you might even get rewarded for returning your old fridges.
I think you’re actually moving in the right green direction with Obama in the lead.
Just a quick thought from a green Dane :-)
I always appreciate the people for their efforts towards the eco-friendliness & glad to see your so eco-friendly blog post. I’d like to refer SUPERIOR LIGHTING as they also playing an important role by launching their energy efficient LEDs & soothing light bulbs for eco-friendliness.
